Genesis 1:1-1:31 Lesson 1 – God the Creator
Key verse 1:1 “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”
1.Read verses 1-2. Who was “in the beginning,” and what does this mean? (Psalm 90:2) What did God do? What was the condition of the earth before God spoke? (2a) How was the Spirit of God involved in creation? (2b; Psalm 104:30) How does God declare Himself and why is this the foundation of Christianity? (Isaiah 40:28)
2.Read verses 3-13. What did God create on the first day, and why do you think God created light first? (3-5) What did God create on the second day and how did He prepare for birds and fish? (6-8) What did God create on the third day and how did He prepare for living creatures and man? (9-13) What does this tell us about God?
3.Read verses 14-25. What did God create on the fourth day? (14-19) What is the role of the sun, the moon, and the stars? What did God create on the fifth day? (20-23) What did God create on the sixth day? (24-25)
4.Read verses 26-31. After creating the world and all living creatures, what did God create? (26-27) What does it mean to be created in God’s image? What work did God give man and how does this establish creation order and give meaning to mankind? How did God provide for the needs of mankind doing God’s work? (29; Matthew 6:33)
5.How many times is the phrase “God saw that it was good” (or its equivalent) repeated in chapter 1? What does this teach about God, the world, and yourself? (31; Psalm 19:1-2) What do you learn from this passage about God? (Col 1:16; Rev 4:11)
