* When God’s Love Is Doubted (1-5) 

1. Who does the serpent represent and what is his character? (1; Rev.12:7-9; Jn.8:44)  Observe carefully the steps in the serpent’s temptation of the woman. (Compare 2:16-17 with 3:1,4,5) How did he plant pride and doubt of God’s love in her heart? What was his main purpose in tempting her?  

2. How did the woman answer him? (2,3) What was her attitude toward God and his word? Read verses 4-6. What were her inner desires?  What finally motivated the woman to take the fruit and eat it— and give some to her husband? How could she have overcome this temptation? (cf. Mtt.4:1-11; Jas.4:7)

3. Read verses 6b-13. What were the immediate results of disobeying God’s command? (7) What do you think this means?  Think about other consequences of the disobedience in detail.

4. What was God’s purpose in asking Adam the question, “Where are you?” What does his answer reveal about his present condition? How did God confront Adam with his sin? What does his answer reveal about sins’ effect on their relationship with God and each other?

5. How did God curse the serpent? How is verse 15 a preview of the gospel of our Lord Jesus, and hope to fallen man? How did God punish the woman and the man? How are these punishments related to the blessing and the mission? How can these curses be removed? (Gal 3:13, Jn3:16-18, Mk16:15)

6. How did God continue to show his love for fallen man? Why did God expel the man and the woman from the Garden and preserve the garden? Do you think Adam and Eve received the gospel? Explain. What is the way back to the Paradise— the kingdom of God?
