L2 Jesus’ Calling for The TwelveLesson 2
Jesus’ calling for the Twelve
Mark 3:1-19, Luke 6:6-19
Key Verse Mark 3:14-15
“He appointed twelve that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach and to have authority to drive out demons.”
I. The need for a shepherd (Mark 3:1-12)
1. Think about the man with a shriveled hand. How did some Pharisees and Jesus see this man differently? (2-3,4) Why did Jesus become deeply distressed? (3-5, Lk6:8) What might have been Jesus’ intention in telling the man to stand up and then asking the rhetorical question? What did the Pharisees’ reaction show about them? (6, Lk6:11) What might have been the motivation for Jesus calling the disciples?
2. Think about Jesus who eventually restored the man. (Jn 10:11) How did people respond when they heard about all he was doing? (7-9) What do the size, extent, and enthusiasm of the crowds coming to Jesus tell us about those times?(Mk6:34) How did Jesus and his disciples handle them? (10-12) What might be another reason why Jesus called the disciples here? (Mt 9:35-38)
II. Calling the 12 Apostles (13-19)
3 Where did Jesus go and why? (13, Lk6:12) After that, whom did he call? What does it mean: “those he wanted” and “they came to him”? In calling and appointing the Twelve, what stated purpose and intention did Jesus have? (14-15, Lk6:13 – find three elements) In light of this passage, what was Jesus’ hope and vision for the Twelve?
4. Who are the appointed twelve? (16-19) Why did Jesus give special names to three of them? (Gal2:9) Why did Jesus call even someone like Judas, who would betray him? What happened when Jesus appointed the twelve apostles? (Lk6:17-19)
5. What can we learn from Jesus (His hope and vision) who called and appointed the Twelve? Reflect on the need for shepherds in today’s world. How can disciples from diverse backgrounds come together to form a “Team” or “community of the called”? (Phi2:5, Eph5:1)
What kind of training must one go through to become a shepherd like Jesus?
